Fedora is a Linux operating system distribution developed and supported by the Fedora Project, a open source community formed in 2003 as a partnership between Red Hat
and volunteer contributors. Red Hat Enterprise Linux branches for
commercial use are based on Fedora, while the open source Fedora Linux
OS itself is freely available for use and customization.
Its main purpose was to serve as a source of software innovations for
the Hat Enterprise Linux releases. This connection between the two Linux
distributions explains the origin of the Fedora name – 'fedora' refers
to the characteristic fedora hat used in Red Hat's "Shadowman" logo.
FEDORA REVIEW The operating system is developed on a six-month release cycle, under the auspices of the Fedora Project. Fedora is sponsored by Red Hat.
The most recent release of Fedora Linux, Fedora 17, debuted in June 2012 and is nicknamed the "Beefy Miracle." Fedora 17 utilizes GNOME 3.4 for its desktop interface and includes, among its other new features and additions, JBoss Application Server 7 and the OpenStack Essex open source cloud platform.
Fedora 18, nicknamed the Spherical Cow made its debut at about the same time Microsoft's Windows 8 was released.
According to the Fedora Project, Fedora is "always free for anyone to use, modify, and distribute." Fedora is said to be the second-most commonly used Linux distribution, after Ubuntu. There are over a hundred distributions based on Fedora, including Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) and the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) project's XO operating system.
