Who's Using Linux?...

Who’s Using Linux? CIOs May Be Surprised...Linux is everywhere - you just don’t know it
Who uses Linux? The glib answer is everyone with an internet connection. Google uses Linux, Amazon uses Linux, and finding someone who doesn't use either of those is hard. Microsoft uses Linux servers as nodes on its Skype network, Hollywood uses Linux in movie production... the list of organisations who use Linux goes on and on.

Stock Exchanges Use Linux

Day trading is so last century.
“Today's stock market traders make their money by trading milliseconds ahead of the competition. To do that you need really fast stock exchanges, which is where Linux comes in.”
Mike Curtis, Executive Director - Service Delivery at Linux consulting firm LinuxIT
  • NYSE started switching to Linux in 2007
  • London (LSE) completed a switch to Millennium Exchange based on SUSE Linux in 2011
  • Singapore (SGX) moved its clearing and settlement operations from an IBM mainframe running z/OS to commodity Linux servers in April 2013.
  • 80% of all stock exchanges rely on Linux
  • Over 50% of the world's trading volume is powered by Red Hat
  • 100% of the Top 5 Asia Pacific stock exchanges run on Red Hat Enterprise Linux.

Movies are made on Linux

Disney/Pixar, DreamWorks, Sony, and other Hollywood production studios use Linux to produce their movies.
  • The Croods took more than 9,100 computing render-years to generate images from 3D models
  • DreamWorks Animation uses Linux and a mix of HP ProLiant G8, G6 and G5 server blades for its animation workstations and servers
  • The Linux server farm has more than 25,000 cores.
“Watching movies online is a big growth market that relies on having plenty of fast stable servers to stream thousands of videos simultaneously.”
Mike Curtis, LinuxIT. Not surprisingly, Netflix uses Linux.

The automotive trade uses Linux

Linux clusters are widely used to run crash test simulations.
And now Linux is moving out of the facilities and into the cars. The XTS Sedan due out in June 2013 features a Linux powered driver interface.

  • The GENIVI Alliance, founded by BMW, General Motors, Peugeot Citroen and major component manufacturers are developing Open Source software for in-vehicle infotainment
  • The Automotive Grade Linux workgroup of the Linux Foundation includes Jaguar Land Rover, Nissan and Toyota and many electronics and component manufacturers
  • The workgroup will facilitate widespread industry collaboration that advances automotive device development, providing a community reference platform that companies can use for creating products.

Banks use Linux

The International Space Station uses Linux

  • The International Space Station (ISS) has announced that it is now running Debian Linux on its laptop fleet
  • The laptop network is used by crew for everything from collecting imagery to running day-to-day functions such as tracking the Space Station's position
  • Keith Chuval of the USA said they needed ‘an operating system that was stable and reliable – one that would give us in-house control. So if we needed to patch, adjust or adapt, we could’.

Takeaways

  1. The biggest organisations around the world rely on Linux servers because they’re fast and reliable
  2. Creative industries and financial institutions alike trust Linux servers to facilitate collaboration, boost innovation and, above all, drive profits
  3. There’s no more ‘Linux or Windows’. None of these businesses use Linux or Open Source based on a political agenda - they use it because it works
  4. A Linux consulting firm such as LinuxIT can help make Linux and Open Source work for organisations through a holistic set of best practices
